Henry Squire and Sons Limited
A brief history
William Squire began making locks on the present site in the mid 18th century and by the time his son, Thomas, joined him his locks were well known enough for the company to be recognised as such and the date 1780 marks the recognition of this fact. The late 18th century saw the Industrial Revolution growing rapidly and....

  • EMIGRATION to CANADA - 1880's
    Possibly influenced by
    the completion of the
    Canadian Pacific Railway
    1885

    HENRY THOMAS SQUIRE & wife
MARY ANN PACE of BENTLEY went to CANADA, in the 1880's, showing in 1891 census of LETHBRIDGE, NWT. Alberta since 1905.

The CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY was completed in 1885. ALEXANDER TILLOCH GALT Canadian High Commissioner at London, called for immigration into Canada from Britain and other European countries to help settle western Canada, now the railway was completed, similar to JAMES JEROME HILL of the Great Northern Railway and partner, NORMAN WOLFRED KITTSON.

Both men were syndicate members of the Canadian Pacific in it's early era.

The Kittson name shows up in the North West Mounted Police - March West To McLeod of 1873/74. Son - Dr. JOHN KITTSON of the North West Mounted Police. His younger brother ALFRED KITTSON married VIOLET PACE, daughter of HENRY PACE, a watchmaker at Lethbridge

GALT or his son ELLIOT T. GALT
    had holdings in LETHBRIDGE, Alberta
    coal and railway building

    GALT MUSEUM and ARCHIVES
    site

    Perhaps it's no mystery then.....

    why HENRY THOMAS SQUIRE
    & wife MARY ANN PACE

    of BENTLEY chose LETHBRIDGE
    as their destination in Canada.

    • I had wondered about this, for years, becoming quite fascinated, with their movement history
    • Their nephew.....
CHARLES VICARAGE PACE (my grandfather) visited them at Lethbridge in the 1890's.
    • CHARLES may have come out to Canada with his sister MARY ANN who had married SAMUEL WILLIAM HAYNES at Pelsall, Staffordshire in 1891.
    • CHARLES returned to Staffordshire and married in 1898.
    • His aunt and uncle also returned to England for a short time
    • other SQUIRE and PACE relatives were convinced to emigrate to CANADA.
    • HENRY SQUIRE & wife returned to CANADA, and others including brother JAMES LANE SQUIRE and wife EMILY (nee PACE) and brother JOSHUA PACE and I believe, THOMAS H. SQUIRE settling at NORWOOD, Ontario and another brother who went to VIRGINIA.

    SQUIRES operated

    • Flour mills and general stores at Norwood, Havelock, Queensville in the Province of Ontario.
    • J.L.SQUIRE became Justice of the Peace and School Board Trustee.
    • They were active in the Methodist Church.
    • EDWARD "TEDDY" PACE, brother of CHARLES VICARAGE PACE, came to Canada in the 1930's and operated a general store at nearby CORDOVA MINES.
    • "TEDDY" PACE and friend Mr. BUCHANNAN of HAVELOCK were both traveling salesmen for a time. PACE sold hardware - BUCHANAN sold shoes. It's possible but unknown to me for certain that PACE may have promoted the Henry Squire & Sons can opener in Canada as well as other SQUIRE manufactured goods. Even today, WALMART sells Henry Squire can openers in Canada. BUCHANNAN later operated a store at Havelock.

    • EDWARD Teddy PACE is buried at HAVELOCK, Ontario. His brother, CV PACE - buried 1926 at LETHBRIDGE, Alberta.

      • When visiting Lethbridge cemetery,
I noticed near my grandfather's grave,
a Rev. Buchanan and several other Buchanans - buried
      • Possibly BUCHANANs at LETHBRIDGE and HAVELOCK connected ?

    Meanwhile, at NORWOOD, Ontario
    Many others,
    local SQUIRE-PACE related family members

    are buried at NORWOOD, Ontario

    It is likely
    but not absolutely known yet:

    • JAMES LANE SQUIRE (buried at Norwood)
      and his siblings
      were also PACE descendents.
    • Their mother, MARY LANE is thought to be

    Edward EDWARD "Teddy" PACE 1873-1958
a prize gardener and often a judge in county fairs in England, - says RON PACE of WALSALL UK. He probably came to HAVELOCK, Ontario in the 1930s and was my aunts favourite uncle. A travelling salesman, he sold hardware, possibly helped make HENRY SQUIRE & Son, can openers popular in Canada. Later, ran a General Store at CORDOVA MINES, Ontario, when gold was mined there, remembered by IDA CHARD of CORDOVA MINES, ONTARIO and HAVELOCK TOWN HALL STAFF remember Ted Pace, of 17 Quebec Street, Havelock with Katie Anderson, they said.

IDA CHARD (who was in her 90s when I visited her about 2005) told me, her father bought the general store from Teddy Pace who then moved on to Windsor, Ontario. Ida said her family had relatives in Michigan and would stay at Teddy Pace's place in Windsor when her family went to visit in Michigan, probably near Detroit.

Ted married three times, one wife being 26 years his younger, caused a "falling out" with family in England, he left, coming to Canada. His uncle JOSHUA PACE, aunts EMILY and MARY ANN (siblings of EDWARD PACE 1845-1877 my great grandfather) had married SQUIRE brothers, above, who had prieviously emigrated, going first to LETHBRIDGE, Alberta. HAROLD HUNTER - Havelock Historian - told me, Teddy's last wife, was KATY ANDERSON. Ted and wife are buried at Havelock. A step-son - Jim PACE - son of Edward's wife's sister, was brought up in their household.

Mary Ann PACE & husband Henry Thomas SQUIRE lived at LETHBRIDGE, showing in the 1891 census. They knew of the other PACE family because my grandmother passed stories on to me, of these people, when I was young, my grandfather, Charles, had died 16 years before my birth. I remember stories of Tom Three Persons, said to be a son of Fred PACE. A Great grandson of Fred PACE found my web site and we have put some family history together. click here to see that.
Hugh DEMPSEY, noted western Canadian Historian and History Channel commentator - has written a book - "Tom Three Persons"

It was said, FRED PACE's brother HENRY had a daughter, married to a KITTSON, possibly related to the NWMP surgeon Col. John KITTSON who later ran a drug store at MAPLE CREEK Saskachewan, and is buried there.

John Kittson's father was Norman Wolfred KITTSON 1814-1888 of SOREL, Quebec, a fur trader, later mayor of St. PAUL, Minnesota, partner in the American Fur Company and operated steamboats on the Red River. He was also a financial backer of James J. HILL's Great Northern Railway. HILL was a Canadian from an eastern Ontario farm family.

BETHUNE - Norman KITTSON's eldest brother, ANGUS, also a fur trader (1783-1858), was the great grandfather of Henry Norman BETHUNE (1890-1939), Canadian physician and surgeon and founder of the "Barefoot Doctors" of China fame.

It is also very likely, the SOREL, Quebec KITTSON family was aquainted to contemporary, John MOLSON of brewery fame, who was also into the creation of steamboats on the St. Lawrence River and built Canada's first railroad from St. John to Laprarie, Quebec.
