- The Mason's were not afraid to travel.
- His son, GEORGE, (1851-George 2 b Durham) - (my g.grandfather)
immigrated to PHILADELPHIA, PA the following year in October 1885 to work as a carpet weaver
in the Philadelphia Carpet Mill.
- His wife, LOUISA, and four daughters followed him in January 1886.
- His son, JAMES, (my grandfather) was sailing in the Merchant Marine Service, and followed them
to Philadelphia in Dec, 1888.
- GEORGE's brother, ELIJAH, also immigrated to Philadelphia after the death of his first wife,
and was also a carpet weaver.
- Their sister, LOUISA MASON HAYCOCK, immigrated to Worcester, MA. Her husband, JOSEPH HAYCOCK
was also a Primative Methodist Preacher in Kidderminster, Worcestershire.

- dtr Mary Ann 15 b DURHAM - the census taker could most likely have taken her name down incorrectly.
Maria was mrd Mar 1867 Walsall and if this is her in the census it would explain that she was born in Durham,

NOTE that
Joseph ARCH - born 01 Jul 1773 Chr 11 Jul 1773 EXHALL, who wed
Mary HANDS 11 Feb 1794 Saint Lawrence, FOLESHILL Warwickshire, in the present day city of Coventry.
Joseph moved to ESSINGTON Staffordshire and died there in Jan 1823.
The youngest son, James ARCH was born 1822 ESSINGTON but returned to EXHALL, some time later. Obviously JAMES had an ongoing connection with the GOODE family of his grandmother Mary GOODE as later in the 1851 census, he had in his household, a Martha GOODE 11 years old, as a servant, in 1851.
The GOODE and HAND surnames were also to be found at ESSINGTON - BLOXWICH as noterd by Essington Historian Jim EVANS, who has often kept me informed on PACE and related family historical facts.

In this 1881 census along with this family was mention of ELIZABETH COWLEY servant. I am interested in COWLEY because in my grandmother's ANNIE PACE nee ARCH in MONTREAL was JIM COWLEY always at our family get-to-gethers. Jim was another uncle to me and I remember him taking me out when I was just old enough to start remembering stuff. JIM was Chief of Police Montreal Harbour and helped get my father a job on a ship back to England about 1939. I was born there in 1940. So I have an interest in COWLEY and suspect he was connected to the Elizabeth Cowley who was a servant at this THOMAS ARCH farm. JIM was also a wrestler and taught at the Montreal YMCA - Gord Pace
another researcher writes:
MARY ARCH above is my great-grandmother, and I am named for Caroline
Hannah ARCH (Carrie above) who appears on your site. MARY ARCH married one Frederick Joseph TUSTIN, and we will be going to a TUSTIN family gathering next weekend, so hope to meet some other people with information on the ARCH family then.

Letters from ARCH researchers
Dear Sir
I have ancestors whose surname is Arch and they are from Warwickshire. I don't know a lot about them
except that Hannah ( Ann ) Arch refers to herself as on her marriage certificate as 'Hannah Sabiner Arch' and on her daughter's birth certificate as 'Sarah Hannah Sabina Arch'.
She married Thomas Marshall in Sheffield in 1862. Her father was listed as William Arch, a labourer. He age keeps changing. In 1862 she was 18 thus born in Birmingham 1844. In the 1881 Census of Leeds she was 34 yrs, thus born in Birmingham in1847.
I have found an Ann Selina Arch born in Birmingham to a William Arch in 1836. The witness to her marriage was Ellen Arch. I was hoping that you may have come across some information or these names from that part of the family during your research?
Yours Sincerely,
Geoff Place - Melbourne Australia
Subject: ARCH surname Date: Sun, 7 Mar 1999 From: "Colin Nichols" colinb@nichols1.freeserve.co.uk To: gordpace@eagle.ca
I see from the Staffordshire page that you are researching the ARCH family.
So is my wife. Her family passed from Northants [NORTHAMPTON] in the 15th century through the BLACK COUNTRY in the 19th and so into BIRMINGHAM in the 20th. TIPTON was the main area of interest in the 19th, as her family were miners there.
About 1805 her NATHAN ARCH moved from BEDWORTH Warwickshire to TIPTON.
He had 7 children:
- Mary Ann (1808-
- John (1811-1839) who died in Armidale NSW
- Nathaniel (1814-1825)
- David (1816-1830)
- Isaac (1819-1860) wed Ann PARTRIDGE 1842
- Jabes (1821-1824)
- Dorcas (1824- )
ISAAC ARCH 1819-1860 and his brothers and sisters were born in Tipton between 1808 and 1824. He married Ann PARTRIDGE in 1842 and their children, NATHAN, ELIZA, DORCAS, DAVID, MARIA AMELIA, MARY JANE and ISAAC, were born in TIPTON, DUDLEY and DARLASTON between 1842 and 1860. They married into the DUNN, PATCHETT, PHILLIPS and CLEAVER families.
She has been in touch, about your people, with Harry ARCH,
who runs what is virtually a ONE-NAME ARCH STUDY and has records going back centuries.
He has a record of your family.
His records show your Maria 35, b Durham, is actually Marah and George, her brother, married RUTH PENRICK and they lived at 16 Blackenall Street. Does that mesh with your understanding?
W.H. ARCH, 60 The Bury,
PAVENHAM, Bedford, MK43 7PY, England.
Unfortunately, Harry has passed on June of 1999
Any possibility of a link, do you suppose?

Note - Webmaster GTP
From HARRY ARCH, I learned that my grandmother's ARCH ancestors came from EXHALL, Warwickshire - EXHALL and BEDWORTH, both Warwickshire, are a mile or two apart. A connection looks likely, at this point...GTP
