WEST BROMWICH CULLWICKS
who seem to descend from WILLIAM of The CLIVE
|
John Cullwick speaking:
Over the last 20 or so years I have been able to disprove some of the theories
of my great uncle Prof Geoffrey Cullwick (1903-1981). Not many, I admit.
But one significant find was
- that there were
two West Bromwich trees - not one, and
- that SAMUEL CULWICK, Vicar Choral (1817-1881)
WAS NOT the brother of JAMES of Union St, West Brom (1804-1874)
SAMUEL was, in fact, the brother of
- JAMES (1804-1876) of ASTON
James of Aston was a scale beam maker and a member of the Swedenborgian Church in Birmingham - very like
the Methodists.
- JAMES (1804-1874) of WEST BROM.
was a tin holloware maker and a spokesman
for the holloware workers in the West Midlands - regularly speaking on behalf of
the workers (cf William the cooper in Limehouse).

I have been looking around for people
interested in the name CULLWICK for quite some time.
Please post your ggrandfather CULLWICK's data to the list if you have it or
e-mail me separately.
I would be so happy to have found living long-lost cousins!

He had at least 3 children: b = baptized

Hello Vanessa,

My great grandmother was EMILY CULLWICK, born BROMSGROVE, Wor. about
1845 so there is a good posibility there is a connection to be found, with some
further research. More on that later. GTPace

John also has some CULLWICK cousins in OTTAWA.
Their grandfather, Geoffrey Cullwick (1903-81), was a Professor at Toronto University from 1924 onwards (Mechanical Engineering) and he has two grandsons who both live in Ottawa.
JOHN mentions:
"The Cullwick name is so rare, but I have a detailed tree compiled by my father's uncle going back to before 1600."
I haven't seen this yet, but maybe later. John did send me the following.
The origin of the name Cullwick is in WORCESTERSHIRE incidentally. It is from Cola's Wyck (Cola's dairy farm) which was a hamlet within two miles of the centre of Worcester which was referred to in various ancient documents.
My Cullwicks were in the BRIDGNORTH area by the 16th century (QUATT) and moved from there to SHIFNAL and NEWPORT, then to KNIGHTON in Radnorshire and finally (in 1840) to WOLVERHAMPTON - where I was born in 1946 incidentally. They were saddlers until well into this century, and Methodists from the earliest days of organised Methodism (about 1800).
I have checked that out with Free BMD
and can add the following detail - JOHN CULLWICK
7 ELEANOR CULLWICK - b 27 Sept 1835
Eleanor WALL (Nee CULLWICK) does not appear on the 1881 census. Charles is "married" but I suspect he is actually a widower. There is a possible death for Eleanor WALL on Free BMD in the June 1875 quarter in Worcester aged 41. Too much of a coincidence for it not to be her. - JOHN CULLWICK 18/12/2002
+ CHARLES WALL b 1827 Tything, Worcester m 1 Feb 1853 at Claines.
Charles was a baker and confectioner employing 2 men and living at The Tything West Side, 39 Britannia Square to Salt Lane, Whistones, Worcester.

Michael married Eleanor REEVES on 29 Aug 1846 at Aston Juxta (M011684)
Could this REEVES family be connected to the Mary REEVES who was the grandmother of my JOSHUA PACE who was most likely present at his son's wedding in 1868
I further believe there is some connection to a George
LEDBROOK family whose wife CHARLOTTE looks to be a sister to my great grandmother, Emily CULLWICK as the 1881 census shows in their West Bromwich household Emma CULWICH 7 F born Laney Green, Rel: Niece

"JOHN of HATTON HALL" near SHIFNAL in Shropshire
- John and Eliz started family life in Worcester then raised the remainder of their family at HATTON HALL, near SHIFNAL where he seems to have worked as a gardener for the SLANEY family.
|
If the first child born at Sheriffhales is correct, this would seem to indicate that he firstly moved
from Bromsgrove to be a gardener at Lilleshall for the SUTHERLAND family. Probably moved from
an estate house attached to the SUTHERLAND ESTATE to be Head Gardener for the SLANEY family at Hatton.

George was a wheelwright and carpenter for the Duke of SUTHERLAND on his Lilleshall estate. At some point, the Duke leased a large property to him that was called The Coffee House. In about 1921, the Sutherlands sold their Lilleshall property, and the houses in Sherriffhales were sold to the County Council. So George and Walter then became council tenants.

Wesleyan Baptism practices
Notice the baptismal date, the same for all six above.
As a point of interest, some non-conformist families had all children
baptised individually in the Methodist Church, then later, were all
baptised as a "Job Lot" in the Anglican Church.

I'm therefore, interested in CULLWICKS of BROMSGROVE, since my great grandmother seems to
have been born there about 1845. New found information has revealed that EMILY CULWICK born Bromsgrove
was a daughter of VICARAGE CULWICK - above - and SARAH WARD - m 20 Oct 1834 St Martins BIRMINGHAM.
The WARD FAMILY show in SHARESHILL parish where the PACE FAMILY was also since the 1720s. VICARAGE was a son of
JAMES CULWICK and AMELIA ROWLESTONE who married at WORFIELD Shropshire 11 Feb 1793.

another Vicarage Culwick researcher
I am at present researching the Culwick family and have discovered that my ggg grandfather was a Vicarage Culwick born in Shropshire but they seemed to have moved around a bit. I believe he was born around 1811 to A James & Amelia. Amelia i believe was Amelia Rowlestone but have not verified this. I cannot beleive that there can be many Vicarage Culwicks.
My ancester left the Birminham area abt 1860 to go to London where my mum's family have lived ever since. I dont know if your Vicarage and my Vicarage could be the same as I dont hold much with surname spelling as in 1881 there were 10 different spellings of it. Now it seems we are down to the two double LL & single L
Have a nice day - Jackie W - London
YES Jackie - it sure is a great day that you've come along and helped straighten out
the 'wonderment' of the origins of VICARAGE CULWICK - it is a great leap ahead in our combined
CULLWICK research - one "L" or two
I think VICARAGE as a CHRISTIAN NAME must be very rare and my great
grandmother EMILY CULWICK must have known something about VICARAGE,
maybe as a surname. In her case it was her father's Christian name and
in this case, it points to Bromsgrove and near Bromsgrove is Cleeve
Prior where the VICARIDGE and LAMPIT name occur in the parish register.
