My early days were with the Dodsworth family in Ottawa, Canada. I spent the 1948 summer at Paynton.
I remember 1948
workers erecting poles for electric power - a new thing on the horizon in 1948. Until that year electricity hadn't come to that part of Saskachewan, but they did have telephones, the magneto ones with a crank on the side.
I remember the "COMMUNITY RING"
which everyone answered and Mr. Dodsworth listening at the phone, the look on his face as he listened and visualised the "community news" of the day, at Paynton, SaskachewanThe pleasant smell of a coal oil lamp was a familiar household characteristic and a luxury was a Coleman lantern.
I remember
the CASE eagle, standing on the world, in front of the tractor garage on the main street across from the railroad station where steam engines would stop every day and dazzle us kids with their panting, hissing and welcome smell of hot oil and grease.
1948 - It was a good summer for an eight year old kid, from Ottawa, with relatives in Saskachewan
I remember,
as a kid at Paynton, climbing into a big round General Steel Wares galvanized tub, in the middle of the kitchen floor, in front of the wood stove, to have a bath. The water
was heated in buckets on the wood stove.Myles and Ibernia
seemed to know what to do.

the DODSWORTH family lived atOUTLOOK, Saskachewan
Coincidental
happeningMy brother ALAN PACE married SHIRLEY OGDEN nee SCHROEDER 1970 at Oakville, Ontario
When ALAN and SHIRLEY honeymooned, they visited ALAN's uncle WALTER DODSWORTH and aunt JESSIE in Victoria, BC.
WALTER was brought up near OUTLOOK, Saskachewan
SHIRLEY had an aunt from a town near OUTLOOK, Saskachewan
They discovered WALTER had dated an aunt of Shirley in his early days, in that small Saskachewan town.
He had taken Shirley's aunt a beauquet of flowers in his earlier days ....Trivial stuff
but what makes life
what it is
I had some happy memories In my early days,
with the Dodsworths.
I could write more.
Maybe I willThis is where my
early childhood memory
and conscious visual life
commences- LOOK - you'll even see these NOVA SCOTIA Dodsworth-Tuttle folk lived at WALLACE NS - same area as my BENNETTS. What do you make of that !! - GPace
- about 1940 I was brought to Canada during WW2 from Birmingham, UK, when cities were evacuated of children during the war.
- I lived in the same county of Nova Scotia as these Ibbitsons & Dodsworths, but with BENNETT relatives at WALLACE. See BENNETT page
- Later, I was taken to OTTAWA to live with a family of my father's sister, who had married a DODSWORTH.
- It's unknown if those Dodsworths were related to the following DODSWORTHS of Nova Scotia, Ohio, New York state.
- I hope you're not too confused with this.

HARRISON - Cumberland County, Nova Scotia - Yorkshire origins
DODSWORTH researcher - Colene Dodsworth, PEI Canada says:
A Harrison genealogist told me that they think Luke had need of a fuller (Luke had several mills in MACCAN, Nova Scotia, south of AMHERST) and that THOMAS came to be employed there. Another family history says that Thomas and his two brothers came to North America. They were mechanics. The two brothers went to Ohio. USA (there are many Dodsworths in Ohio), and Thomas came to Cumberland Co. One of his sons was named Marmaduke and he had a daughter, Margaret. There were 9 children in this family.
"In a letter from Robert Dodsworth, North Yorkshire, England, he wrote the following"....
I thought the THOMAS DODSWORTH in the Mormon records, who was the son of THOMAS and MARGARET who had another son, MARMADUKE, might possibly be the right THOMAS. I haven't been able to locate any other previous information in the Nova Scotia records in the information I've seached so far.
I feel pretty sure that the THOMAS, christened at WEST WITTON (North Riding of Yorkshire) on 07 Dec. 1800 is your Thomas because of the fact that he named one of his children MARGARET, after his mother and another MARMADUKE, after his brother. Whilst THOMAS seems to have been a very common name in the Dodsworth family, MARMADUKE certainly was not.
I have covered the records completely for the period 1571 - 1697, but thereafter my information is very sketchy. The only Dodsworth information that I have after 1697 for West Witton is the two christenings that you have of Thomas and Marmaduke, and the burial of MARGARET DODSWORTH on 26 July 1814 aged 43.
Margaret's address is given as New Close House near CARLTON. Carlton is close to WEST WITTON. This is a pretty imposing sounding address for those times, and would seem to indicate that THOMAS (her husband) was probably a farmer.
I have also found the marriage of MARMADUKE on 09 August 1819 at COVERHAM (the adjoining parish to West Witton) to Isabella SUNTER.
They had the following children all christened at COVERHAM:-
- 24 Nov. 1819 - Margaret - Marmaduke - shown as a labourer living at West Scrafton at the time(near West Witton)
- 04 Dec. 1820 - Elizabeth - Marmaduke - labourer of West Scrafton
- 27 Feb. 1822 - Thomas - Marmaduke - farmer of Swineside
- 20 Mar 1823 - Robert - Marmaduke - farmer of Swineside
- 04 Nov 1824 - Marmaduke - Marmaduke - snr. farmer of Highfield

Bob Dodsworth writes:
I also have the burial of Marmaduke's father THOMAS at Coveham on 08 Apr. 1821 aged 54. Thomas is shown as being of SWINESIDE, so that it would appear that Marmaduke probably took over his father's farm on his death. I have only covered the records of Coverham up til 1837, but there is no further reference to Marmaduke or Isabella after 1828. I can certainly see no further mention of Thomas which would tend to support the fact he moved away. It would probably be worth researching the records of West Witton and surrounding parishes more closely. I could have a look for you next time I go up to Northallerton, but unfortunately this is unlikely to be before the Summer.I feel pretty sure that all the Dodsworths living in the area of North Yorkshire where your Thomas came from at that time were descended from Thomas Dodsworth of Thornton Watlass. My understanding is that the family originated in Dodworth in the West Riding of Yorkshire, and that Thomas Dodsworth acquired the Thornton Watlass Estate in 1415 by marriage to Agnes daughter and heiress of Hugh Thoresby Chief captain of Richmondshire, and I think that this was the start of the Dodsworths in North Yorkshire. If I am right, then it's very likely that your Thomas and my family are related somewhere along the line.
Thornton Watlass Estate Incidentally, the Thornton Watlass Estate is still in the DODSWORTH family today.
click here - go to Thornton Watlass Hall in north Yorkshire and read historyThe church at Thornton Watlass is fascinating, and there is a small section devoted to the Dodsworths who were quite clearly the Lords of the Manor. My wife and I have stayed at Thornton Watlass Hall, and the walls in the Sitting Room, Dining Room, Library, Halls and Staircase are completely covered with portraits of various members of the Dodsworth family that have lived there over the years.
Regards,
Bob Dodsworth
My great grandmother was MARGARETTA DODSWORTH LERCH. Her parents were THOMAS DODSWORTH and JANE HUTCHINSON. I have found Thomas on the 1850 census in SENECA, ONTARIO County, New York. Other than that, I don't have any information. Is there any chance he is connected to your Dodsworth line? Thank you!Diane Kurtz dkurtz@snet.net
I'm researching a DODSWORTH family, but mine originate in Middlesex/London (marriage of Anthony to Martha STILL/STEELE recorded at St Anne Soho in 1835). Fascinated to read that the DODSWORTHs were once landed gentry! I should be so lucky to trace my line back to Yorkshire even!

return to topI found your website while searching for the name MYLES DODSWORTH.
MYLES DODSWORTH, age 9, born Ontario, was in the 1891 Census of the Township of St. Vincent. Meaford is in St. Vincent Twp.
Myles had a sister, Minnie E. Dodsworth, age 11 in 1891. They were step-children of Abel GOULD and his wife, JANE.
I am going to do some further research on this, but I believe they were Jane's children. I also believe she was Jane PIERCEY who was married four times - first in 1864 to William PROCTOR, then in 1869 to Henry BROWN, then after 1873 to Mr. DODSWORTH and in 1888 to Abel GOULD.
This is what I found tonight:
Mary Elizabeth Dodsworth, b 24 Aug 1879 Albion Township
and Martha Ann Dodsworth, b 24 Aug 1879 Albion Township
twin daughters of Peter Dodsworth and Jane PierceyMartha Ann Dodsworth, 22, of Euphrasia (Twp.), b "Tobocoe"???, (sounds like Etobicoke) Spinster, dau of Peter Dodsworth and Jane Percy m Alexander GILRAY (name Fraser is written above Alexander), 28, of Euphrasia, b Euphrasia, son of Thoas GILRAY and Ellen ATKINS on 12 June 1904 in Euphrasia Township
I also noticed in the marriage of
Martha Ann Dodsworth to Alexander Gilray, that a witness was Minnie Dodsworth - so this wasn't Minnie! Minnie must have been the twin, Mary Elizabeth Dodsworth! (The 1891 census says she was 11, so this would fit with her birthdate in Aug 1879.) So I'll have to check again for a Mary or Minnie in the marriages.Myles Campbell Dodsworth, 22, of Tp. St. Vincent, b Tp Euphrasia, Bachelor, Farmer, son of Peter Dodsworth and Jane Pearson (obviously should be Piercey) m Ibernia McFarlane, 23, of Tp. St. Vincent, b Tp. St. Vincent, Spinster, dau of Charles McFarlane and Isabella Dee(gan?) on 2 Sept 1903 at THORNBURY, Ontario
Death:
Jane Piercy Gould, b 1st Mar 1844 Peel County, Ontario d 30 July 1920 St. Vincent Twp., Grey County, Ontario buried Meaford. dau of James Piercy reported by husband, Abel Gould
Couldn't find Peter Dodsworth's death registration.
I checked the Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid (OCFA) and found only one Peter Dodsworth - buried at New England Methodist Cemetery, Euphrasia Township, Grey County! This has to be the right person!
So....it looks like the families we are researching are the same! I will have to do some further checking.
If you check the World Connect Project at Rootsweb.com and enter the name Jane Piercey, you will find my gedcom. Jane was a daughter of James PIERCEY and Isabella MASHINTER. Isabella was a sister of my ancestor, Richard MASHINTER. Both were children of George and Elizabeth MASHITER (note different spelling).
