EARLIEST
PACE ANCESTORMy earliest proven Pace ancestor was
Gawin PACE, 'lanius de Mearsford' (lanius being butcher).
- He was of the PACE family of
Aydon Castle and Corbridge, in Northumberland, England.- But before him in 1317
John 'PAGE' in a gang of bandits at Aydon Castle
with the company of Gilbert de Middleton seized the castle.- In 1336 Robertus PAGE of Thornbrough, a hamlet near Corbridge, was listed on the Subsidy Roll at 5 shillings.
- Gawin PACE was buried in Ponteland in June 1609.
He had two known children:
- ISABELLA who married
+ JEFFERY AITCHISON at Ponteland in November 1614
- THOMAS PACE who married
+ JANE AITCHISON (Jeffrey's sister?)
- a month later at Ponteland in December 1614.THOMAS who was born circa 1590 had several children:
- SIMON who died in 1699;
- JOHN baptised 1616;
- GAWIN bapt. 1620;
- MARY and
- SUSANNA bapt. 15 September 1621, and
- ROBERT PACE of Aydon Castle born circa 1633.
ROBERT paid hearth tax in 1664 at Aydon
He married a Barbary - - - - - of New Riding
ROBERT PACE had 6 known children:
- JOHN of Great Whittington;
- RICHARD bapt. 1658;
- EDWARD bapt. 1663 who married Elizabeth Moffitt in 1689;
- ELIZABETH bapt. 1667,
- LYONELL bapt. 1672 who married
+ FRANCES SHIELD in 1704- and MARY PACE
my direct ancestor, born circa 1660, who married
+ JOHN SHARP of Great Whittington in 1691.AN HISTORICAL NOTE:
On Sept 1703, Robert Troutbeck, Vicar, called on Catherine Bell, Margaret Urwin, Isabel Todd, Margaret Wilson and "Mary Sharp" when Richard Gibson tried to serve a warrant for debt on William Todd.They 'fell on him, some by the hand, others by his legges, cloaths and other parts of his body, took him and dragged him and some of them by his cravat had so far strangled him that he was left speechless and almost dead'.
I don't know what lesson we can learn from that little episode except, perhaps, always to wear a clip-on bow tie when serving warrants.
These Paces may sound a little rough,
but remember that while Southern England lived in relative peace and waxed fat, the Borderers lived on a battlefield, a waste land, for almost 300 years, from the late 13th century to the middle of the 16th. If they grew up hard they ample cause. These were the people from whom sprang the reivers, the riding families. And the reivers gave the English language the words, bereaved and bereft and blackmail, which had a different meaning from the one it has today -- it was more like a protection racket. And they instituted the 'deadly feid' - deadly feud - long before the Hatfields and McCoys were ever heard of.I hope you didn't mind the little bit of history from my mother's county, Northumberland, and the turbulent PACEs who are among my early ancestors.

Descendent KC writes from Australia
Nov 14 2009 from
- ROBERT PACE lost his wife
MARGARET (GREY) in 1837, and on the English Census in 1841 it shows him and 6 children.
- Now he married again to JANE YOUNG, and they had 3 children together.
- ROBERT died in 1852,
so JANE decided to come to Australia in 1858 as her brothers were already over here running a flour mill in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria, Australia.
- With her she brought the 3 younger children of hers, and the 2 youngest of Robert and Margaret's as they were in their 20's. (Isabella's brothers, Robert and Henry.
- ISABELLA married GEORGE DAVISON
and they had a total of 9 children in England. 2 of their sons came to Australia, Sydney & Bacchus Marsh somewhere between 1881 and 1884, probably because their Uncles were here. (Robert and Henry)ISABELLA and GEORGE DAVISON
eventually came to Australia themselves in 1889, to guess where, Baccus Marsh
and brought 3 children with them.There was one daughter left behind in England as she was already married to a Policeman and she was my great grandmother.
Now she lost her husband in 1903 and she had 4 children to look after, so she came out to Australia as well, yep you got it Bacchus Marsh.

CLICK HERE - To see GenForum postingFLODDEN FIELD: Plain in Northumberland, England, on the border with Scotland, at the base of Flodden Hill, the northeastern continuation of the Cheviot Hills. It is the site of a celebrated battle, fought on September 9, 1513, in which a Scottish army commanded by James IV, King of Scotland, was defeated by the English under Thomas Howard, Earl of Surry (later 2nd Duke of Norfolk), Chief Lieutenant of King Henry VIII of England. Upon Henry's refusal to accede to his demand to cease making war on France, an ally of Scotland, James raised an army of 100,000 and invaded England. By the time the Scottish army reached Flodden Field, it had dwindled to about 30,000 as a result of desertions. The opposing English army was of equal strength. By nightfall, a decisive English victory was obvious. The total Scottish wounded and dead amounted to some 10,000; English losses were about 4,000. Among the Scottish dead were King James, the Archbishop of St. Andrew, 12 Earls and men from every important family in Scotland. The "King's Stone" an un hewn granite pillar, is believed to mark the spot where James fell.
