William and family on the 1871 census.
At 4 Spread Eagle St, St Anns Limehouse:

  • William COLLOWICK, head, 38, cooper, b Worcs, Dudley
  • Martha, wife, 38, B Worcs, Dudley
    1. Walter (1856-1932) son, 14, cooper, B Worcs, Dudley
William's eldest son was Walter, born abt 1856 in Dudley Port, a canal port between Dudley and Tipton - actually just in Staffordshire. He married Clara BOWLES, dau of Richard BOWLES

Walter (1856-1932) and Clara (1861-?), I am told, were both members of the Salvation Army and therefore highly respectable and religious. They had 6 children:

      1. Bertha b 1884. Md SHARP 1912 in St Albans
      2. Clara b 1887. Md HULL in same June quarter in St Albans Reg District (double wedding?)
      3. Walter William b 1888. No further information about him. Think he was on 1901 census, then nothing.
      4. Lilian Maud b 1892. Md CARNEGIE in Hampstead RD in June 1926
      5. Martha b 1893. In 1901 census, then no further info.

  • WILLIAM CULWICK (1858-1912).
Born Dudley Port, Staffordshire (Dudley Reg Dist.) in March quarter of 1858.

Died in June quarter of 1912 in Gillingham (Medway R.D). Buried at Gillingham Parish Church.

    MARRIAGES
    Md 1. Emma SCARFE (1856-1881) in 1879

WILLIAM and MARTHA got married on 23rd July 1855 at the Pepper Pot (St JAMES, TIPTON. They were both living in DUDLEY PORT at the time.

Jane has sent me a copy of the birth certificate of WALTER (1856-1932), eldest son of WILLIAM and MARTHA.

    1. WALTER b 16th October 1856, son of WILLIAM CULWICK, cooper (journeyman), and MARTHA CULWICK formerly WILLIAMS. Address Angel Street, Queens Cross, DUDLEY.

    2. Now WILLIAM and MARTHA got married on 23rd July 1855 at the Pepper Pot (St James, Tipton), both living in DUDLEY PORT at the time.
    3. St James appears to actually be sited in Horseley Heath (on the B4163 Lower Church Lane). About half a mile north of Dudley Port. Both Horseley Heath and Dudley Port would be in Staffordshire then, I feel sure.
    4. But where Walter was born was over 2 miles south west of Dudley Port and the other side of Dudley Castle and zoo. And definitely in Worcestershire. Queens Cross is the continuation south west of Dudley High Street.

So a number of interesting thoughts here:

    1. 1. Does anybody know where and when William was born in 1858? Was it Angel St too? If so, why did they both say they were born in Staffordshire on various censuses when clearly it should have been Dudley in Worcestershire?
    2. 2. Was William a *master* cooper in London, or was he still a journeyman (worked for a master, got paid by the day or "jour")?
    3. 3. Why did they move from Dudley Port to Dudley town centre between the 1855 marriage and 1856 birth of Walter?
    4. 4. Where would Walter and William have been baptised? I had thought the Pepper Pot and am having the records there checked next week by a friend Pam Hall. But it may be St Thomas in Dudley if they were born in the centre of Dudley. There appears to be a church and cemetery on Queens Cross 50 yards from Angel St on my A-Z. Not sure if that is St Thomas.

Any thoughts or info would be very welcome. - Email John Cullwick
