Mary Ann Culwick
Having had no luck finding the birth of Mary Ann in 1850 - 53, I decided to try to track down Emma, the 7 year old born in Laney Green and living with aunt Charlotte Gubbins nee Cullwick in the 1881 West Bromwich census. Cannock register office were very helpful; in a phone call the only likely candidate they could find born in that area in 1873/4 had the middle initial E; no Emmas found. They would/could not tell me more so I sent for the cert.
Frances Emily Culwick was born on 9th January 1874 at Laney Green, Cheslyn Hay.
Mother Mary Ann Culwick of Laney Green.
No Father's details entered.Free BMD shows the death of
Frances Emily Cullwick aged 8, March 1882 quarter in West Bromwich.
She could therefore be the 'Emma' as above;
another case of this Cullwick branch switching their Emmas and Emilys?
BHMARY ANN CULWICK in 1871 census
sent by Pace cousin Shirley Mackin of ArkansasMary Ann married JONES (somewhere like Worcester or Stourbridge) in 1882 so I guess Edward would have become their eldest son. may have become pregnant with Pace cousin

I rather think that Mary Ann was a barmaid in West Bromwich in the 1881 census and married Frederick Jones a couple of years later and had family by him.
I wonder what happened to her second illegitimate child Edward (b Laney Green 1877). He was with his "grandfather" Joshua PACE in 1881 in Laney Green, but seems to have disappeared after that. - JC
Mary was the mother of Edward CULWICK, born 15th June 1877 at Laney Green, Saredon, illegitimate son of Mary Ann Culwick. Edward is living with old Joshua PACE in 1881 and is described as his grand-son (so was son Joshua the father?). No sign of Edward in the 1891 census, nor 1901, nor a marriage or death for him. Was he sent abroad before 1891?
I assume that Charlotte GUBBINS took Emma into her home in West Bromwich, and she probably died at Charlotte's house. I think Gord's lateral thinking (blather he called it) might be helpful. Frances Emily PACE would have been 5 when Frances Emily CULLWICK (her first cousin) was born in Laney Green. It may well be that Mary Ann was very fond of her niece Frances Emily PACE and wanted to give her daughter the same names. And presumably she unofficially became Emma to distinguish her from Fanny or Emily PACE.
JCThe PACE family have a link with Wednesfield and Willenhall.
In 1861 census, the brother of Joshua (then 53) was living in Mountfield St, Wednesfield:Thomas PACE (bt May 1805 in Shareshill), keymaker, 56, b Laney Green
Elizabeth PACE, wife, 58, b Bilston
Mary PACE, dau, 25, b Bilston
Alfred PACE, son, 10, b Willenhall.
Mary Ann Cullwick (1850-?).
Md JONES possibly abt 1883.Need to check her actual birth date.
Not on census for 1851.In 1861 census,
may be Mary Ann CULLISS (sic), aged 13, house servant,
b Bham, in household of John COOPER, an iron works labourer,
aged 62, b Sedgely and his wife Mary, 55, also b Sedgely(age should be 10, but may have lied - and Mary Culliss is a servant in Wednesbury close to Harriet).
20 yo in 1871 census in Saredon.
Possible she was born within 9 months of the death of Vicarage in Jan 1850, and was living apart from her mother in the census - or Sarah forgot about the baby when the enumerator came!Mary was the mother of
Edward CULWICK, born 15th June 1877 at Laney Green, Saredon,
illegitimate son of Mary Ann Culwick, a domestic servant of Laney Green.
